i noticed on the way into work this morn that booths are being set up for arts festival. i am looking forward to eating chocolate-covered cheesecake-on-a-stick while meandering through rows of pricey but extremely magnetic artsy stuff. there are some great acts this year - richard thompson, martin sexton, sonny rollins...

a couple of years ago during arts fest, i was wandering through market square with my friend skippy when we spied a 7-foot tall mailbox costume sitting empty and dangerously unattended in front of mailboxes etc. with swift but deliberate speed, i crawled inside the mailbox suit and stood in the center of the square, waving madly at festival-goers while doing a loose interpretation of an irish jig. alas, my career of mail receptacle was cut short. i should have made a run for it.

there is something magical about dressing up as foodstuffs. two halloweens ago, i traumatized by housemate by sitting motionless on the couch, wearing a 6-foot tall mr. peanut costume complete with tophat and cane. last year, the mom and i transformed a few yards of felt into a lumpy yet serviceable candy-corn suit. when i was a wee one, i used to dream that the fruit-of-the-loom guys would show up at my house and we'd all eat snowcones together.
